Military Aviation

The very popular aviation thematic is continued this year with the release of the Military Aviation issue which follows on from Pioneers of Aviation and Commercial Aviation issues, released in 1998 and 1999 respectively. The designs for all three issues are by artist Vincent Killowry. The aircraft featured on this year's stamps are the Bristol F.2b Fighter, the Hawker Hurricane, the De Havilland Vampire and the Alouette III helicopter, all of which played a significant role in the development of Irish military aviation.

The first day cover design, also by Vincent Killowry, depicts the "Silver Swallow" Display Team flying down the main runway at Casement Aerodrome and peeling off into a starburst as part of their display.
